Wendy Davis, the State Senator from Texas, who famously sported pink sneakers to filibuster for 13 hours on the Texas Senate floor in an attempt to block an anti-abortion bill, is getting a lot of attention and that is a good thing. Her supporters chose orange as the color to support her. And Texas has been flooded in orange ever since. Everyone I know has bought her Mizuno sneakers as a nod to her determination and spirit.
At an intimate lunch in Mill Valley, California, she recounted how the Republicans didn’t believe she could stand and talk for as long as she did. But they must not have read her bio. Davis is used to hard work and a good fight. Raised by a single mother with little education, Davis started working at 14. By 19 she was a single mother herself working two jobs. She put herself through college (the first in her family to do so) and graduated top of her class. Moving from a Texas trailer park to Boston, where she was accepted into Harvard Law School. All while raising her young daughter.
As so often happens to women in politics (think the never-ending Hilary hair diaries), her looks seem to have led to a grand underestimation of her brains and determination. Political blogger Erick Erickson dubbed her “abortion Barbie” in a recent tweet.
But she seems to be taking all the interest in her in stride. She talks everything from politics to fashion in her many articles, very at ease in her own skin. You can read about her and fashion proclivities- from relaxing in Lulu Lemon to dressing up in Miu Miu-, in the September issue of Vogue. And everyone is talking about her wearing heels and not sneakers in the Vogue photo shoot-mightly missing the point that she is a whole woman and not one moment in time when she knew what she needed to do to make it through the filibuster (where she also wore a back brace).
After having an intimate lunch with the new fashion and political powerhouse, she is not only my new style icon- she had on great heels, a fabulous dainty diamond thumb ring and got me thinking about all kinds of ways to wear sneakers-but she is also thoughtful, kind and smart as a whip. My favorite kind of icons are strong women whose iconic status has a deep meaning and Wendy Davis is just that.
If you have the urge to run out a buy a pair of Mizuno sneakers or an orange shirt, the best thing you can do it take that money and donate it to her campaign. That is the best way to show her that you support her and her (hopefully) run for Texas Governor. She will be able to use that money in a Gubernatorial race if she chooses to run.
After a lot of struggling in my closet, I ended up wearing our favorite orange jacket, Zara sneakers (similar here) and Mother cropped jeans.
Deciding what to wear when asked to a “casual” political luncheon with Wendy Davis did not prove easy. But with Melanie’s approval, this is what I wore-making me even more in love with these “so ugly they are cute” Zara sneakers. It also took me through date night with hubby!
